The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today that track & field athlete Lopez Lomong (Tully, N.Y.) has been selected as flag bearer for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team by fellow members of Team USA. Lomong, 23, was notified of his selection Wednesday night via phone in Dalian, China, where he is training with the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team.

Two American men go head to head in a race for Olympic swimming history in Beijing – one from the past and one from the present. Mark Spitz’s seven gold medals at the 1972 Games, one of the most famous of all Olympic achievements, is under threat from Michael Phelps, the 23-year-old who came close to Spitz’s record in Athens four years ago when he won six gold and two bronze medals.

Astana Cycling Team General Manager Johan Bruyneel announced that nine riders have resigned for the 2009 season.  Assan Bazayev, Chris Horner, Maxim Iglinskiy, Andreas Klöden, Steve Morabito, Dmitriy Muravyev, Daniel Navarro, Gregory Rast and Michael Schär have recommitted their services to Team Astana and will rejoin a formidable team that includes 2008 Giro d’Italia Champion Alberto Contador and two-time Tour of California winner Levi Leipheimer.

    Three athletes - Rebekah Keat from Australia, Amber Neben from the United States, and Mike Vine from Canada - have filed suit against Hammer Nutrition, Ltd. in the Orange County Superior Court, California, alleging that their positive drug tests were caused by the use of Hammer Nutrition Endurolyte supplements that were contaminated with the steroid precursor norandrostenedione.
